Well done to the WE group at Seaton Sluice Middle School who have collected, put together and delivered 60 bags of goodies for homeless people via the people's kitchen in Newcastle.
To celebrate their fantastic social action they were invited to WE day at Wembley Arena on 6 March where they saw speakers and acts including Prince Harry, Liam Payne and Nicole Scherzinger.
The group of pupils did a project about homelessness with an organisation named WE. A lady called Leah came into our school to help the group start with ideas, and after a vote we decided to do our project about homelessness. For this, we needed to collect donations to make survival packs that included:
- hats
- scarves
- gloves
- toiletries
- food
- socks
- water and lots of other items.
We made around 60 ‘survival packs’ with the donations and a few group members delivered these packs to the homeless in Newcastle. Donations that we couldn’t include in our packs are going to another charity for the homeless for them to collect. Examples of things that are going to charity are jumpers, blankets and food they won’t be able to open if they don’t have the equipment.
Pupils that donated were rewarded with a non-uniform pass which was used on 6 March when WE is celebrated.
We got involved in this project because homeless people are usually ignored and not treated with the same respect as others. They don’t often have anyone to talk to, so by doing this they will know that there are people who care.
The WE organisation have been overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and are extremely proud of the young people who have worked so hard to make a difference to others less fortunate than themselves.
