On 18 November Ofsted published its report confirming that Astley Community High School continues to be a ‘Good’ school following its recent inspection.
A new Ofsted inspection framework was introduced from September 2019. This was the first time that any of the Seaton Valley Federation schools have been inspected under the new framework, a very intensive two-day inspection; so continuing to be a ‘Good’ school is a fantastic outcome for all staff and students at ACHS.
The report reaffirms the school’s previous ‘Good’ Ofsted inspection rating in 2016. The latest report comments: “Pupils say that they are very proud of their school. Staff and school leaders care deeply about the pupils and have high expectations of them. This is an inclusive school. Relationships in classrooms are excellent. Teachers say that they love working here because they really can teach.”
The report highlights that: “Pupils feel safe here. They say that their health, including mental health needs, are a priority. Pupils say that they make friends quickly when they join the school.”
The report states that: “Pupils are polite and courteous and very welcoming to visitors. They are proud of their school and keen to talk about their successes. Pupils have high expectations of themselves.”
Ofsted also state that the school’s safeguarding arrangements are effective: “The designated safeguarding lead is meticulous and thorough in his record-keeping. He knows pupils exceptionally well. He works effectively with a wide range of external agencies. This ensures that pupils receive the help and support they need.”
John Barnes, Executive Head Teacher, Seaton Valley Federation said: “I am absolutely delighted with this report from Ofsted. It recognises what a wonderful school ACHS is. I would like to thank the staff and pupils who on a daily basis work at a level that makes the school as good as this report says it is. I would welcome anyone to read the report and then visit the school so they can see just how good the school is and how the report is a true reflection of what is done at ACHS every day. I am so very proud of the school, staff and students.”
Graham Scott, Head of School, Astley Community High School said: “We are really pleased with this excellent report, which demonstrates the hard work put in by all stakeholders to make ACHS a great place to be. Staff, students, parents/carers and governors all play their part and this report is a reflection of the effort, enthusiasm and determination that they display every day. A report like this with many really positive comments, gives us a clear mandate and focus for the future, which includes the prospect of a very exciting ‘New Build’ school of which everyone can be extremely proud. Well done everyone!”
Cath McEvoy-Carr, Executive Director of Children's Services at Northumberland County Council said: "We are very pleased to see this Ofsted outcome for Astley Community High School - which is an endorsement of all the hard work that goes on at the school and the outcomes achieved for students."
