Year 6 have been enjoying our new topic on Evolution and Inheritance. After researching Charles Darwin, the children were enlightened to hear about Alfred Wallace, the less well-known theorist who also had the revolutionary idea of evolution by natural selection. Whilst exploring these theories, the children experimented by using a range of implements to represent the varying beaks of the famous work of Darwin's Mockingbirds. Picking up grains of rice with different 'beaks' was frustrating but it provided the opportunity for scientific enquiry whilst adopting their mathematical skills. Following this, the children played 'hide and seek moths' where they investigated whether size and colour affected the survival of this species. Whilst enjoying this fun activity, the children developed their understanding of the peppered moth situation when the effects of factories led to an evolution of this species.
