In Year 5 Science, the children have started their topic on Forces. Having already investigated gravity, the children were amazed to discover that objects fall at the same time, regardless of mass! When they found out that only air resistance could affect the speed at which an object fell, the children then investigated the effect of surface area on air resistance. This led to the children designing their own parachutes. After carefully considering how to make a parachute that would fall more slowly, we had a competition to see which was the best. William C-H and Joey W were the winners! The children were then able to correctly identify that a light parachute with a large surface area would be the most successful. We are excited to do more investigations involving friction, water resistance and up thrust after the Easter holidays.
