Our French word of the week is “l’oeuf de Pâques” - Easter egg. Eggs aren’t brought by the Easter Bunny in France, but instead by “les cloches volantes” - the flying bells! Traditionally, church bells fall silent from Good Friday to Easter Sunday to mourn the death of Jesus; legend has it that the bells fly to Rome to be blessed by the Pope, and return on Easter Day to drop chocolate eggs, bells and sweets into children’s gardens and homes. There must be quite a few broken eggs!
