Sunday 30 June was an eventful day for the Seaton Sluice Middle School year 7 rugby team who took part in the Thunder Cup final at Kingston Park Stadium.
Leading up to the event, the team took part in a number of knock-out rounds. Firstly, they took on Whytrig Middle School followed by Churchill Community College winning both matches and landing them a place in the finals.
Arriving at Kingston Park on Sunday, the boys were allocated a changing room where they decided their tactics before gathering in the tunnel ready to take on Belmont Community School. The match didn’t start as planned with Belmont taking the first try. However, the boys dug deep managing to score the next 4 tries (Kyle followed by three from Junior). Belmont didn’t give up though and managed to break through a tough defence to score another try. With some top coaching tips from Mr Barkley, Seaton Sluice went on to score a further 4 tries (Callum scoring twice, Harry then finally Kyle scoring again) winning the match 32-8. All the boys were outstanding on the day but a special mention must go to Harry for receiving player of the match and Kyle for being an exceptional captain throughout the year leading the team to not only this success but also becoming National Champions – well done boys!
Mr Barkley, Miss Curry and all the parents who managed to make the competition were impressed with the teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication the team displayed on the day. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
