As part of our Living Things and their Habitats topic in Science, Year 6 have been learning about microorganisms. They explored the pros and cons of different types and made links with addressing the landfill problems. In groups, the children made composters and will be observing the process of how the microorganisms break down the waste.
We have been making bread to aid understanding of microorganisms within our topic of Living Things and their Habitats. The children made the dough successfully and then watched the yeast grow; the bread nearly doubled in size for some! The children considered what the yeast had needed to grow and made conclusions. After the bread was baked, the children enjoyed eating it!
After learning about the behaviour of microorganisms, the children in Year 6 considered which variables could affect the growth of mould. Each group decided which factor they would like to test. Some thought that toasting the bread might delay the moulding process, whereas others thought that adding substances, such as salt/sugar/honey/spices/water might preserve the bread. They used their previous knowledge of how foods are preserved in the real world to inform their predictions. All samples were sealed for health and safety and will be observed over the next few weeks, or months if they have successful results!
